“THESE SONGS COME FROM STICKY SOUTHERN TOWNS AND BROKEN HEARTS. HARD LIVING AND THE LONG ROAD HOME.”
Mac Leaphart is a singer/songwriter, playing a blend of country and rhythm and blues the Charleston City Paper describes as, "a rowdy set, which seems to meld Gram Parsons with the 'Sticky Fingers' era Rolling Stones."
Leaphart has a blue collar approach to performing and embraces the chance to work any room that he finds himself in. "I spent the better part of a year and most of my money in Los Angeles. LA is great for making industry contacts, but it is not the best environment to play shows and develop an audience. When I made it back to the South, I started playing as much as I could, anywhere that would have me. I am getting my songs heard the old fashioned way, by playing in front of people."
Since his arrival in Charleston in 2007, Leaphart has been performing over 250 shows a year, solo and with his band, Mac Leaphart and My Ragged Company. He has shared the stage with Hayes Carll, Ryan Bingham, Robert Randolph, Todd Rundgren, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion. His 2008 independent release, Line, Rope, Etc. was chosen as one of the best albums of the year by the Charleston City Paper. In 2010, Leaphart's song, "Confederate Roses" was picked up by Charleston Radio station WCOO, and added to regular rotation. Says program director Joel Frank, "Mac's heartfelt and soulful style stand out live and on recordings. We have never had a reaction to a local artist like we have with his song 'Confederate Roses.'"
